From Saints to Beauty Ideals

For more than a century, the sisters of Huize Nazareth were a familiar presence in Best. They educated generations of children through faith, discipline and devotion.

My husband attended their kindergarten, and my mother went to their girls’ school.

In this painting, that past meets the present. The habit remains, but the rosary has been replaced by a syringe. It reflects a time in which beauty and the idea that we can reshape ourselves have become new ideals for many.

Maria Callas (1923–1977) was much more than an opera diva.

At a time when women in classical music were primarily muses or angels, she claimed the stage as an artist in her own right.

She redefined opera through dramatic intensity, but paid a high price: fame, rejection and a longing for love shaped her life.

As a Queen of Spades, Callas embodies the strength to continually reinvent yourself and express yourself fully—even when the world wants to mould you into its own ideal.

This portrait captures the radiant energy of Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, painted from a moment I photographed during her unforgettable performance at Jazz in Duketown 2024.
Her voice is pure improvisation—bold, free, and rooted in the deep currents of jazz, with echoes of gospel and soul.
I translated that sound into color: electric pinks and vibrant yellows explode like riffs, while textured strokes echo the rhythm of a live band in full flight.
It is a celebration of a woman who sings with fearless joy and commands every stage she touches.

This work is a protest against the fashion industry’s narrow ideals and the pressure to make ourselves smaller—thinner, quieter, less visible.
Layered textures, splashes of color and the phrases “Vogue can’t define me,” “Perfection is a prison,” and “Don’t shrink to fit” cut through the surface like a manifesto. The figure stands tall and unapologetic, claiming space as a reminder that beauty and worth cannot be measured by size or trend.

This work is my personal pop-art interpretation of Anne Frank — not as a historical icon, but as a vibrant, thinking, feeling teenager whose voice still echoes across generations. By painting directly onto the pages of her diary, I connect past and present, layering bold color and contemporary expression onto a symbol of silent resistance and lost youth.
